Legacy upload: scuderia ferrari rayban wayfarer

Ferrari has always been known as a brand of luxury, innovation, and quality in motor mechanics since its founding in 1939. They have won numerous Formula One seasons and are still running strong. This season they have teamed up with Ray-Ban to give us the Scuderia Ferrari sunglass collection. The series includes remakes of classic Ray-Ban frames with Ferrari's signature shield and the colours and themes associated with their supercars.

In this edition of SpecxMag, we will be looking at the Ray-Ban Liteforce Wayfarer in the Scuderia Ferrari design. The frame shape is reminiscent of the classic Wayfarer but even at first glance the colours and themes are far from its origins. The new material used for this model is PK001 and the scientific name for this compound is Polyether ketone. It is a thermoplastic polymer typically seen in use for aeronautics, medical implants (such as replacement segments of skulls), among others. It is much lighter than your everyday acetate frame while also being extremely durable and resistant to temperature change. Because of this very reason, it is also very difficult to adjust the fit and I would advise you try the frames on in person and make sure they feel flush. If they do need adjusting I would highly recommend going to an opticians and getting them adjusted there, don’t try doing it at home as the opticians will have more specialised equipment to tailor the fit of your sunglasses.

The front is a very classic Wayfarer design we are familiar with but in this rendition the signature Ferrari red coloured shields in the corners of the frame and the Ferrari logo on the lens really makes this frame stand out. It's a modernised twist that is sure to attract attention. The matte black will suit the majority of skin tones as the matte effect and the silver coating of the lenses takes away the harshness of the black. This is better worn with smart attire as the heavy look of the frame will complement a shirt and/or jacket and may be too prominent to be worn with casuals. The shape is quite masculine, but ladies can pull off the look when wearing darker colours and if they have broader features.

The lens has a soft silver chromance front surface and a nice rose red back surface. In the top left corner, we have the Scuderia Ferrari logo and just below that we have the typical RB sketching seen in authentic Ray-Ban lenses. The lenses have been coating with 6 layers, yes 6 layers of antireflection coating. This reduces lens flare and greatly increases the contrast in vision. The red back coating really makes the environment seem warmer in colour and is a nice change to your typical green or brown lenses. Reds and blues tend to stand out more while blacks seem matted and appear darker. The polarising filter in the lens reduces glare experienced from wet road surfaces, water, white backgrounds, and bright lights. Ray-Ban claims their polarised lenses reduce glare beyond 99%. Polarised lenses are perfect for British roads either when cycling or driving as your eyes won't strain as much after a downpour and roads and traffic is easier to see. You can always tell if your Ray-Ban lens is polarised as they will have on the right lens Ray-Ban P (where P is for polarised).

The sides of the frame go along with the aesthetic of the rest of the design. It has the same matt black seen on the front of the frame but the two defining features are the metal temples and the rubber ends. The temples are gunmetal grey with a brushed finish where the left side sports the Ferrari logo in a darker tone while the right has the Ray-Ban logo of the same effect. The side contours with the shape of your head making a really flush fit and the red rubber ends help increase friction to prevent the frame from slipping down. It also adds more comfort as the rubber cushions the contact behind your ears.

The case accompanying the frame also had its looked revamped to match the Formula 1 2018 theme. It’s made of imitation leather and is made to manifest the colours typically seen in the interior design of a Ferrari. It has the signature shield encrusted on the right-hand side while having the Ray-Ban logo on the left. The case has a red stitching lining the lip and going down the side of the case. The interior is a high quality felt and is lens friendly and has a hard-plastic segment (also covered in the same felt). This ensures maximum protection against normal use when storing the sunglasses.
